Joel Spence (PhD) is one of Australia’s leading live entertainers and singer-songwriters, captivating audiences for more than 20 years across pubs, clubs, festivals, corporate functions, resorts, and major events nationwide and internationally.
As a singer/songwriter, guitarist, pianist, and multi-instrumentalist, he has supported some of Australia’s biggest acts, including Daryl Braithwaite, James Reyne, Jon Stevens, Spiderbait, and The Angels.
As DJ Herbie J, Joel has performed at major festivals such as Kiss My Grass, Future Music, Summer Dayze, and the L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival. He has performed both nationally and internationally at resorts, clubs, and pubs, while delivering countless corporate and private events.

In 2025, he earned a PhD from Griffith University for his groundbreaking research on the role of songwriting and performance in fostering wellbeing, healing, community resilience, and cultural justice for First Nations peoples in Ieramugadu (Roebourne), Western Australia - focusing on Big hART’s Songs for Freedom project.
